What are we about?
The Federal Music Project was created by the Works Public Administration as one of their ways to create more jobs. Ever since we appointed Nikolai Sokoloff as director of the project in 1935, we have provided many musicians who were in desperate need of employment a job.

What is our purpose?
Our purpose is to make sure that talented musicians with gifts do not become jobless, homeless, and incapable of getting sufficient food for them and their families. Before the Great Depression, radio and sound movies forced thousands of musicians into unemployment; music was being delivered electronically rather than by live musicians, leading to the loss of their jobs. The following economic fall made their situation a lot more difficult financially. So, this project was created in order to give musicians a sustainable income.

Where will our program be used?
The program will be implemented all over the country. Wherever the musicians can play, such as concerts, churches, schools, and even town halls. In the various places that the musicians will play in, their compositions could be made by composers that live in the area. It allows for a tremendous amount of exposure of the composer's pieces that would never have been performed, and further exposure of our project. They can boost the moral of the communities where they perform.

How will we achieve our goal?
The Federal Music Project hires musicians who are in search of a job. When it was first up and running, there were only music classes offered mainly to poor adults for a low price. As it will expand, there will be sponsored concerts by orchestras and chamber groups. Then certain schools will be able to adopt our practices by adding music classes. The project could establish new orchestras throughout the country in cities that had never had orchestras, and set up various forms of musical ensembles. This project will organize concerts and classes, and make profit off of it.
